Abstract

A flame spray powder comprises individual nucleus particles coated with a layer of finely divided powder of a different material by a binder, the nucleus and coating material being exothermically reactive together to form an inter-metallic compound with the release of at least 3000 gram calories per gram atom when fused together. The binder may be a varnish e.g. phenolic varnish. Materials specified are:- Al, Ni, B, Si, Ag, Cl, Au, Ba, Ca, Cr, Li, Mo, Nb, Pr, Ti, Zr, Sb, Se, Ta, Te, U, V, W, Cd, CTa, Co, Mg, Th, In, As, Zn, Y, Hf, Bi, Pb, Np, Pu, K, Na, Ru, Tl, Sn and Be. A metal hydride e.g. titanium hydride may be added in a minor amount to the other components. The coating layer may be deposited in the form of a paint on the nucleus component by first dispersing the coating component in a binder or lacquer e.g. one which does not depend on solvent evaporation to form a dried or set film.ALSO:A flame spray powder has the form of individual nucleus particles coated with a coating layer of a finely divided powder of a different material bound to the nucleus by a binder, the nucleus and the coating material being exothermically reactive together to form an intermetallic compound with the release of at least 3000 gram calories per gram atom when fused together. Materials specified are: Al, Ni, B, Si, Ag, Ce, Au, Ba, Ca, Cr, Li, Mo, Nb, Pr, Ti, Zr, Sb, Se, Ta, Te, U, V, W, Cd, Ga, Co, Mg, Th, In, As, Zn, Y, Hf, Bi, Pb, Np, Pu, K, Na, Ru, Tl, Sn and Be.
