Abstract
A composition comprises an aqueous solution containing by weight 1-15% aminopolycarboxylic acid and/or salts thereof having sequestering properties, 3-15% of one or more unsubstituted or hydroxy-substituted alkane carboxylic acids, or partially neutralized salts thereof having sequestering properties, and 1.9-10.5% of a base, such that the pH is in the range 6-8. Suitable aminopolycarboxylic acids are EDTA, and salts thereof; suitable alkane carboxylic acids are citric, gluconic, formic, oxalic or tartaric acids; suitable bases are NH4OH (preferred), alkylamines, alkanolamines or hydrazine. Other additives include nonionic detergents, e.g. oxyethylated adducts of alkyl phenols; emulsifiers, e.g. aryl sulphonates and long chain carboxylic acid esters, and corrosion inhibitors. Other solvents, e.g. alcohols or ethers may be present. The composition may be used to remove inorganic scale from metal surfaces. (See Division C7).ALSO:Inorganic contaminants are removed from the surfaces of metals with substantially no attack on the base metal by contacting them with a composition comprising an aqueous solution containing by wt. 1 - 15% aminopolycarboxylic acid and/or salts thereof having sequestering properties, 3 - 15% of one or more unsubstituted or hydroxysubstituted alkane carboxylic acids, or partially neutralized salts thereof having sequestering properties, and 1.9 - 10.5% of a base, such that the pH is in the range 6 - 8. Suitable aminopolycarboxylic acids are EDTA, and salts thereof; suitable alkane carboxylic acids are citric, gluconic, formic, oxalic or tartaric acids; suitable bases are NH4OH (preferred), alkylamines, alkanolamines or hydrazine. Other additives include nonionic detergents, e.g. oxyethylated adducts of alkyl phenols; emulsifiers, e.g. aryl sulphonates and long chain carboxylic acid esters, and corrosion inhibitors. Other solvents, e.g. alcohols or ethers may be present.
