A standard for supporting shelf brackets (9) comprises two spaced parallel rods (4, 5) of square wave formation with their vertical portions (6, 7) received in vertical grooves (2) in two parallel vertical sheet metal members (1, 10), and with their horizontal portions 8 extending between the metal members (1, 10) and serving as bracket supporting cross-pieces. Some of the vertical portions 6, 7 are secured to the sheet metal members. Each standard may have a single rod of square wave formation.
