Abstract

1,076,835. Interferometer. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. June 28, 1965 [July 1, 1964], No. 27224/64. Heading G2J. [Also in Division G1] An interferometer for producing interference between two beams plane-polarized at right-angles to each other comprises a diffraction grating which produces two separated secondary beams of substantially equal intensity from the recombined interfering beams, the secondary beams being passed through an analyser means so that they display periodical variations in intensity when the path difference in the interferometer is varied. The recombined beam may be produced by a Michelson interferometer Fig. 1 (not shown) by passing light from a source (1) which has been collimated by a lens (2) into a split cube (5) having a polarizing filter (6) on its diagonal interface; the two beams (3) and (4) polarized at right angles to each other, are passed through quarter wave plates (9) and (10) respectively, and reflected back through the plates and split cube to give a recombined interfering beam 24. As shown in Fig. 2, the beam 24 is passed through a diffraction grating 16 consisting of transparent strips which are separated by spaces equal to their width giving two first order diffraction beams 17, 18 which are focused by a lens 19 through an analyser 21 on to photo-cells 22, 23; the beam 18 also passes through a quarter wave plate 20 so that the variations in the intensity of the two beams 17 and 18 are in phase quadrature.
