A steel mat for reinforcing concrete comprises longitudinal rods 1 and transverse rods 2 joined together by welding and has at least one region (II) free from longitudinal bars. The mats overlap each other in such a way that the region of one mat which is free from longitudinal 'bars, overlies a region of an adjacent mat containing longitudinal bars.
