Abstract

Fluorolefins are made by pyrolysis of difluorochloromethane at 650-1000 DEG C. in the presence of 0-25% by weight of steam, based on halomethane, wherein a stream of reactants is run through a preheated regnerator bed consisting of granular or lumpy particles of non-volatile, mechanically and chemically inert material, and the direction of flow of the reactants is periodically reversed so as to cool the regenerator bed in its respective entrance and exit zones and maintaining the central zone of the bed at operating temperature by heating until heat losses in the bed are compensated. Specified granular materials are alumina, magnesia, zirconia, titania or calcium fluoride. It is preferred to heat the central zone of the bed to a temperature 20-50 DEG C. above that of the reaction temperature. The process is illustrated by reference to apparatus drawings (not shown). In an example, tetrafluoroethylene, hexafluoropropene and octafluorocyclobutane are obtained as products with small amounts of fluoroform, trifluorochloromethane, difluorodichloromethane and trifluoroethylene by-products.
