Abstract

Liquids are separated by liquid chromatography using a separating column comprising a tube having an internal diameter between 0.05 and 2.0 millimetres and a length of at least one metre wherein the separating agent is either the inner surface of the tube itself or a liquid coating on the inner wall of the tube, or alternatively is in the form of granules which are sufficiently large in relation to the internal diameter of the tube for substantially all the granules to be supported by the wall of the tube. In the apparatus of Fig. 1 (not shown) the sample is injected through diaphragm (17) into the stream of elution liquid flowing from reservoir (10) to column (14). Examples relate to (1) separation of amino acids using a column the inner wall of which has been activated by treatment with ammonia at 300 DEG C; (2) separation of sugars using a similarly prepared column; (3) separation of terpenes using a column the inner wall of which is impregnated with polyethylene glycol (4) separation of amino acids using a copper tube the inner surface of which has been oxidised with oxygen at 180 DEG C.
