Abstract

Apparatus for the separation of substances dissolved in a liquid comprising a column of a sorption agent and means for supplying liquid to one of the columns and withdrawing liquid from the other end of the column, characterized in that a surface of the column which is parallel with the direction of the liquid flow is covered by a liquid-tight casing which is arranged to be elastically pressed against the sorption agent with a pressure that is substantially independent of such variations in the diameter of the column as are due to the swelling and shrinking of the sorption agent under the action of the liquid flowing through the column. The liquid-tight casing may be surrounded by or consist of a resilient casing, for instance of rubber, which owing to its own tension presses the liquid-tight casing against the sorption agent with a substantially constant pressure or the surface of the column which is parallel with the direction of the liquid flow is surrounded by a closed chamber into which a pressure medium may be introduced.
