Abstract

A gas chromatography column comprises a tube containing a longitudinally extended core, the core consisting of, or the core and preferably the inside of the tube being coated with a partitioning agent. In one embodiment the column comprises a capillary tube of internal diameter four to fifty thousandths of an inch and having a wire extending therethrough coated with a partitioning agent. The tube and the core may be of metal, for example copper, gold, nickel, or preferably cupro-nickel, or of polytetrafluoroethylene or nylon. Partitioning agent may be introduced into the column by (a) simple insertion of a coated wire, (b) coating a wire with partitioning agent solution, evaporating the solvent, inserting the wire into a tube and passing therethrough a heated gas to transfer some of the partitioning agent from the wire to the tube, or (c) forcing a partitioning agent solution into the column to coat both wire and tube, and passing a heated gas through the tube to evaporate the solvent. Alternatively the tube may be filled with a liquid or paste, as for example "Araldite" (Registered Trade Mark) which on solidifying contracts to form a core; the core may itself be a partitioning medium, or a partitioning agent may be subsequently introduced directly.
