Abstract

A gas chromatography column is made by coating a wire or filament with a liquid phase, applying to the coated wire a further coating of finely divided support material so that the liquid phase disperses in the support material and forms a thin surface film, the wire then being inserted into the column. The wire, which may be of P.T.F.E., nylon, Cu, Au, Ni or preferably cupro-nickel, may be kinked or swaged to hold the wire in the centre of the column. If the wire is of metal, an A.C. current may be passed therethrough and the wire made to vibrate by subjecting it to a magnetic field, thereby increasing the effectiveness of the partitioning agent.
