Abstract
Novel 2,3,5,6 - tetrahydroimidazo[2,1-b]thiazoles, and the acid addition salts thereof, of general formula <FORM:1076109/C2/1> wherein R represents hydrogen, lower alkoxy, (C1-C6) phenyloxy, lower alkyl, phenyl, halogen, nitro, or lower alkanoylamino, are prepared by reacting 3[b -halo-3-phenethyl or substituted phenethyl]-2-iminothiazolidines with an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal hydroxide, or carbonate in the presence of an inert organic solvent, or by heating a solution of the 3(b -chlorophenethyl)-2-iminothiozolidine in a solvent in the absence of excess base, and the intermediate compounds dl-2-[(b -hydroxyphenethyl) amino]ethyl thiocyanate prepared by treating an a -phenyl or substituted phenyl-1-aziridine-ethanol with thiocyanic acid, dl-2-[a (b -hydroxyphenethyl)amino]-2-thiopseudourea prepared by reaction of a -phenyl or substituted phenyl-1-aziridine ethanol with thiourea, and dl-3-(b -chlorophenethyl)-2-iminothiazolidine and its acid addition salts, prepared by reaction of 2-imino-a -phenyl or substituted phenyl-3-thiazolidine ethanols with thionyl chloride. The intermediate dl-a -phenyl-1-aziridine ethanol is prepared by adding portions of ethyleneimine to a solution containing styrene oxide, ethanol and potassium hydroxide and refluxing for thirty minutes after holding at 30 DEG C. for twenty minutes.
