A tube bending machine for optional right and left hand bends has longitudinal abutments for the tube 11 formed by transverse arms 12 mounted at adjustable apacings on a rotatable abutment shaft 14 parallel with the mandrel bar 10 which supports the tube 11, the arms having limited rotational freedom on the shaft whereby in operative position they bear freely on the mandrel bar or on a tube fitted thereon, the shaft being rotatable in either direction for raising the abutment arms by an actuating arm 17, Fig. 3 (not shown), which can be turned selectively to either side of the shaft. The abutment arm 17 is on the end of the shaft 14 and has a cam surface 20 engaged by an electrically operated lifting device 18. A pivot pin 19 enables the cam to be swung to either side of the shaft and the arm 17 is then locked in position by a pin 21. The heading machine may be operated under programme control.
