Abstract

1,075,791. Percussive drills. VICKERS Ltd. May 11, 1964 [May 23, 1963; Oct. 31, 1963], Nos. 20595/63 and 43113/63. Heading B4C. [Also in Division F1] An hydraulically-operated tool, such as a percussive drill, comprises a housing 101 having a cylinder 111 for a piston 124 which is adapted to reciprocate under liquid pressure so that an element 135 on the piston strikes a tool bit 12 retained in the tool for limited movement by means of a link 11, the cylinder being rotatable so as to control the flow of liquid into one or other of chambers 168, 169 via ducts 114, 115 and ports 122, 123 in the cylinder. As shown, the piston 124 is reciprocable in the cylinder 112 whch has two sets of four grooves 120, 121 adapted to communicate each side of the piston alternately with the liquid pressure via sets of circumferentially-spaced ports 122, 117 and 123, 119. The cylinder is rotated by means of a liquid pressure gear-type motor 130, one gear 129 on the cylinder meshing with a second gear 132. The end 125B of the piston rod 125 is connected to a weight 135 on which is threaded a plate (136, Fig. 1) the plate having a number of holes (137) adapted to slide over guide tubes (138) for pressure springs 141. In operation, upon depression of a lever (167) to actuate a spool valve (165), and with the cylinder in the position shown liquid is fed into an annular groove 113 and, via ports 117, grooves 120 and ports 122, into the cylinder space 168 to drive the piston, the liquid in the space 169 on the other side of the piston being exhausted via ports 123, grooves 121, ports 119 and annular groove 115. Liquid is also fed, via an adjustable needle valve, to the motor 130 thereby rotating the cylinder so as to bring the grooves 120, 121 into communication with a different group of the circumferentially spaced ports 122, 117, 123, 119; the speed of rotation of the cylinder may be adjusted by means of the needle valve. A spring-type accumulator is mounted within a control block 102 in communication with the annular groove 113. Spring buffers (145, Fig. 1) are provided to cushion overtravel of the weight 135. When the tool is used for tamping or vibrating concrete the tool bit may be rigidly connected to the weight.
