[Also in Division E1] Safety net means for ships hatches comprises a pair of rails 1 mounted to extend along parallel sides of the hatch opening, a net 4 mounted by two sides on said rails, means located at a third side of said opening for stowing a folded net, a third side of the net being securable in said stowage means, and traction means located adjacent the ends of the fourth side of the hatch for drawing the net across said opening. As shown, the traction means comprises a pair (only one shown) of endless cables 15 which engage at the fourth side of the hatch a pair of winches 14 and at the third side a pair of pulleys 10. The cables are attached to rollers 51 at the corners of the net such that on rotation of the winches in one direction the net is drawn across the hatch opening and when rotated in the opposite direction the rollers 51 push rollers 5 so that the net is stowed in a folded position. The rails, stowage, cables and winches are adapted to be mounted on the under surface of deckhead 2 but outwardly spaced from the coaming. Each rail 1 is a tube (Fig. 3) having a longitudinal slot 22 through which extends a pin 23 having an eye 24 in which is located an edge rope 25. The pin is slidable within a mounting member 26 and is tensioned by a spring 27. The member 26 supports a pair of rollers 30. Both the cables are disposed within their respective rails. The method of attaching the cables to rollers 51 is illustrated in Fig. 4 (not shown).
