Abstract
1,075,277. Gyroscopic apparatus. ELLIOTT BROS. (LONDON) Ltd. June 30, 1965 [July 9, 1964], No. 28461/64. Heading G1C. A stable platform for inertial navigation systems comprises two stable elements 28, 29 rotatable about individual azimuth axes and mounted symmetrically around a common centre on a C-shaped frame 27, the frame being mounted for rotation on a shaft 21 defining the inner roll axis in turn connected through a forked head 25, embracing a pitch axis spindle 26, to a shaft 23 defining the outer roll axis and rotatable in a bearing 24. The element 29 comprises a two-degree-of-freedom vertical gyroscope with sensing elements, the casing of which is continuously rotated about its vertical axis at a suitable speed to eliminate manufacturing inaccuracies. The element 28 is an azimuth gyroscope preferably also a twodegree-of-freedom gyro. The gyroscopes are both of the type in which the rotor is supported on a spherical air bearing. Electrical means are described in the Specification for coupling together the stable elements to maintain them in orientation.
