Abstract

Fuel cell electrodes are formed from a noble metal catalyst-containing carbon prepared by incorporating a non-noble metal salt in an aq. dispersion of C, simultaneously or subsequently reducing the mixture obtained to ppt. the metal on to the C, and adding thereto a noble metal compound which electrolytically displaces the non-noble metal. Specified noble metal compounds are H2PtCl6, K(C2H4)PtCl, PdCl2, and RuCl3. The reducing agent may be added to the dispersion before or after the non-noble metal salt. Specified reducing agents are NaBH4, KBH4, H2 and HCHO. Specified non-noble salts are CdCl2, CdSO4, CoCl2, CoBr2, CoI2, SnCl2, SnBr2, CuCl2, (CH3COO)2Ni and Fe3(SO4)2. The treated C may be made into a paste, optionally with a water-proofing agent, e.g. polytetrafluoroethylene or polyethylene, and applied to a wire mesh backing or shaped without a backing.ALSO:A noble metal catalyst - containing carbon is prepared by incorporating a non-noble metal salt in an aq. dispersion of C, simultaneously or subsequently reducing the mixture obtained to ppt. the metal onto the C, and adding thereto a noble metal compound which electrolytically displaces the non-noble metal.
