Seamless metal tubes are produced by piercing a hot blank 1, Fig. 1, to form a shell, spreading a scale-preventing, or scale lessening, flux over the inner peripheral surface of the shell, the flux having a melting-point substantially lower than the temperature of the shell, rotating the shell about its axis at a speed which will keep the flux spread over the bore of the shell, and passing the shell and a mandrel 2 between rolling mill rolls 10. Mandrel 2 is lubricated by means 40, and is rotated by means 34. Shell 1 is supported by two or three pairs of parallel rollers 15 driven from a motor 16 by a chain drive 17, and the shell is held in engagement with the rollers by a friction roller 18, carried by levers (18a), which is pivoted by a pneumatic or hydraulic cylinder (19). Stops (20) are provided on the ends of lever (18a) so that a shell is prevented from passing down a skid (21) on to mandrel 2 until the previous shell has been removed. The shell is axially movable prior to being supported by mandrel 2 by skewed rolls, and rolls (30), (30), may be provided as part of a conveyer for rotating the shell.
