Abstract

Pyridine or substituted pyridines are prepared by interacting glutaraldehyde, a substituted glutaraldehyde or a "precursor" thereof in the liquid phase with ammonium ions or ammonia in the presence of elementary sulphur; the term "precursor" being defined to mean a compound which, in the absence of ammonium ions, will give rise to glutaraldehyde or a substituted glutaraldehyde when subjected to the temperature and pH employed in the reaction. Specified precursors are the ethers of 2-hydroxy-3,4-dihydro-2H -pyrans. The sulphur may be introduced as a polysulphide which will give rise to elementary sulphur and the ammonium ions or ammonia may be introduced as such or generated in situ, e.g. when employing ammonia, from hydrolysable amides. A pH in the range 1 to 7 is preferred and may suitably be obtained by use of an ammonium salt and additional acid, preferably that acid corresponding to the ammonium salt.
