An apparatus for surface treating articles comprises a tank 5 for the treating agent, an endless belt 1 conducted through the tank around rollers 3, 6, 8, 10 and between side walls (11), Fig. 3 (not shown), such that the belt and the said walls form a trough 2 in the tank to contain the articles during treatment. One of the rollers 3, driven by a reversible motor 13, is disposed such that part of its circumferential surface projects over the side of the tank 5. The rollers 3, 6, 8 extend over the full width of the belt whereas the roller 10 comprises two disc-like rollers, one engaging each edge of the belt 1. The belt is formed on its underside with V-shaped projections adjacent each edge to engage in grooves in the rollers 3, 6, 8 for lateral stability of the belt. The belt 1 is tensioned by a device 7 on the roller 6. The rollers, belt and side walls arrangement may be either mounted directly to the tanks or mounted on a sub-frame insertable into the tank. In operation, the belt 1 is driven in a direction such that the articles are carried into the trough 2 until treatment is complete when the direction is reversed and the articles are discharged over the roller 3. The roller 6 is placed at a lower elevation than the roller 3 such that articles can be transferred from one to another of a plurality of these tanks. The belt 1 may be formed as a mesh or slatted endless member depending on the treatment required.
