Abstract

A rigid or semi-rigid cellular material is produced from a mixture comprising a polymer or copolymer of vinyl chloride, a polyisocyanate, a blowing agent, an unsaturated ester and an unsaturated anhydride which is copolymerizable with the other reactants, by heating the mixture in a mould under pressure to form a partially expanded material, cooling the mould under pressure, removing the partially expanded material and finally completing the expansion by heating the material in the presence of water or water vapour. Pressures from 3 to 7 tons per square inch are used. Polyisocyanates specified are p-p1-p11 triisocyanate of triphenyl methane, p-p1-diphenyl methane diisocyanate, toluene 2-4-diisocyanate, toluene 2-6 diisocyanate. Blowing agents, which are used in amounts from 5% to 40% by weight of the initial mixture, mentioned are azodiisobutyrodinitrile, asodiisobutyric amide oxime; azidicarbonamide; p,p1 - oxybis (benzene sulphonyl hydrazide); benzene sulphonyl hydrazine; benzil hydrazones; tertiary butyl-amine; nitrite; N:N1-dinitroso-ethylene urea; N:N1 - dinitroso - N:N1 - dimethylterephthalamide; N:N1 - dinitrosopentamethylene tetramine; urea oxalate; amino-guanidine bicarbonate and nitrourea. Fuorocarbons may also be used. Anhydrides specified are maleic anhydride, itaconic anhydride, acrylic anhydride, citraconic anhydride and mixtures of these. Unsaturated esters are preferably liquid and are used in quantities of 2% to 30% by weight of the initial mixture. Those specified are methyl, n-butyl, isopropyl, n-hexyl and benzyl esters of methacrylic acid; esters of methacrylic acid and diols, triols and polyols such as dimethacrylate esters of ethylene glycol, triethylene glycol, 1:3 propane diol or 1:3 butane diol, penta erythritol and alkyl or aryl esters of unsaturated organic acids such as butyl maleates, fumarates or itaconates; esters of acrylic acid particularly the mono- and di-esters such as the ethyl, butyl, ethylhexyl esters and those formed from ethylene glycol and 1:3 butane diol.
