Abstract

A process for preparing rigid cellular products comprises mixing polyvinyl chloride, a polyisocyanate, a nitrogenous blowing agent, at least one polymerizable compound containing an ethylenic double bond and an ethylenic anhydride, heating said mixture in a mould under pressure and then subjecting the blank or rough shape thus obtained, after ejection from the mould, to expansion in hot water or water vapour, the expansion of the blank or rough shape being effected in a single selected direction. To carry out this expansion, a mould allowing increase in only one direction is used. In Example 1 the starting materials are polyvinyl chloride, toluene diisocyanate, styrene, maleic anhydride, azobisisobutyronitrile, azobisformamide and trichloromonofluoromethane; and in Example 2 they are polyvinyl chloride, diphenylmethane diisocyanatem styrene, maleic anhydride and benzene sulphonyl hydrazide.
