Abstract
Articles having a closed cellular foam structure are made from an ethylene copolymer having up to 45% by weight of comonomer and which contains 0.2 to 6% by weight of a cross-linking agent. The article is made by (a) moulding a cross-linkable composition comprising the copolymer, which is then (b) cross-linked and (c) removed from the mould. A physical foaming agent, e.g. CO2 or nitrogen, is diffused at high pressure into the cross linked preform and then this pressure is removed. This expands the foaming agent to produce the closed-cellular foam. The final article has bulk density 0.01 to 0.5 g/cm<3>. Preferably 95% of the cells have a diameter below 0.8 mm with most cells having diameters of 0.01 to 0.1 mm. Preferred copolymers include vinyl acetate and methyl ethyl or butyl esters of acrylic and methacrylic acids.
