Abstract
1,074,483. Pipe coverings; supporting pipes. M. T. PHILLIPS. Nov. 11, 1964, No. 45871/64. Headings F2G, F2P and F2X. A unitary, elongated, insulating and protective covering 10 which is closed laterally so that a pipe or other elongated objects can only be inserted in it longitudinally comprises a core 12, 13 of cellular material relatively uniform in cross-sectional shape with at least one dimensioned opening 11 extending therethrough, the said core being compressively surrounded by a thinner cladding 15 of tough, non- cellular, internally reinforced thermoset resin of load carrying strength. The core is of a vitreous, a polyester resin or an inorganic material and the reinforcement of the cladding is of glass fibre. A piping layout (Fig. 7) is assembled by first threading the seamless coverings on to the pipes, forming the pipes by welding at 33 and protecting the area around the weld with a short length of the covering (Fig. 5, not shown) which has to be slit longitudinally along one side so that it can be hinged open and shut. Special coverings 43 as in Fig. 9 are provided for the L bends 40 of the expansion loop 35. These are of normal crosssection except where flared out at X-X to a larger internal dimension of cross-section similar to that in Fig. 13 (not shown), which allows for movement of the arms 39, 39<SP>1</SP> due to expansion. The coverings 43 are split longitudinally but the coverings of the arms 39 and 39<SP>1</SP> which have the same cross-section and which form the coverings 43 at 48 are not. The joints between the various coverings are sealed by strips of glass fibre tape on to which are brushed several coats of a viscous resin dope. For manufacture, segments as at 54, 55 &c. of the foamed cellular core are temporarily held together on a mandrel by a thin sheet of paper, foil or cloth wrapped round them, a synthetic resin is then applied outside by brushing, trowelling or spraying and is reinforced by glass fibre in the form of a mat, roving or cloth. Due to action of the catalyst the applied becomes hot but subsequently cools and contracts to compress the core material inside it. Anchors supporting the piping layout may also be covered with the resin and glass fibre to protect them.
