Abstract
Thermoplastic synthetic polymeric material which is essentially crystalline and capable of being strengthened by shearing, is strengthened by subjecting it to a plurality of shearing forces which are parallel to each other at any point in the material, at a temperature below the crystalline melting point of the material, so that in the material perpendicular to the direction of the forces, adjacent macromolecules are displaced relative to each other in paths parallel to the forces, and so that the thickness of the material perpendicular to the forces is not substantially reduced. Specified polymers are polyethylene, polypropylene, polybutylene, poly - 4 - methylpentene - 1, poly - 3 - methylbutene - 1 and ethylene/propylene copolymers. Other shearing forces in different directions may be applied simultaneously or subsequently. Examples describe the application of shearing forces to plates, tubes and moulded articles such as shotgun cartridges.
