Abstract
A detergent mixture of alkylaryl sulphonates and sulphated secondary alcohols, or components of such a mixture, is obtained by treating a starting material containing alkyl benzenes with short chain alkyl groups and olefines with 8 to 18 carbon atoms with a calculated quantity of sulphuric acid, dissipating the heat of reaction so that a temperature of 15 DEG to 25 DEG C. is maintained, maintaining this temperature for at least 45 minutes, separating the crude alkylate from the acid phase which contains secondary alkyl sulphates, treating the crude alkylate with a calculated quantity of oleum, separating the sulphonated mass into a sulphonated and a non-sulphonatable component, and subsequently treating the said acid phase containing secondary alkyl sulphates and the sulphonated component of the treated crude alkylate either separately or in admixture by dilution, separating residual sulphuric acid from the reaction mass and then neutralizing to give a solution containing the detergent mixture or two solutions each containing one component of the detergent mixture. Examples are given for the preparation of detergent mixtures and of the separate components, and are described with reference to a suitable apparatus.
