Abstract

Alkaryl hydrocarbons are sulphonated by dissolving the alkaryl hydrocarbon in sulphur dioxide, adding the resultant solution to the first compartment of a multi-compartment sulphonator under sulphonating conditions, together with sulphur trioxide diluted with sulphur dioxide in an amount insufficient to completely sulphonate the alkaryl hydrocarbon, passing the partially sulphonated alkaryl hydrocarbon successively through the compartments of the sulphonator, sulphonating with sulphur trioxide diluted with sulphur dioxide in each compartment, the proportion of unsulphonated hydrocarbon being progressively decreased and the sulphonation completed in the last compartment. Reaction temperatures of 50 DEG to 60 DEG C. are preferred. Specified alkaryl hydrocarbons include the alkylation products of benzene, naphthalene, diphenyl and chlorobenzenes and -naphthalenes. An apparatus for carrying out the process having a three-compartment sulphonator and the sulphonation of dodecylbenzene therein is described.
