Abstract

1,074,219. Valves. BOISE CASCADE CORPORATION. Oct. 28, 1965 [July 26, 1965], No. 45701/65. Heading F2V. With a horizontally-disposed valve 2 connected by an annular lip 21 to the discharge sleeve 20 of a fluid container 18, the carton 19 which is tilted to the horizontal position, the fluid from the container flows by gravity to fill the valve chamber 15. Upon depressing a diaphragm 30 to axially displace the frustoconical closure-member 42 from its seat 10 fluid passes through an outlet 64, and some enters an auxiliary chamber 62 via a space 15a in a closure-member boss 40 and openings 60 in a wall 4, as well as the space between a tubular extension 32 of the diaphragm and a non- circular opening in the wall 4 through which it passes; the boss 40 is secured within the extension 32. When the diaphragm is released it progressively returns to the position shown, the fluid in space 15a being forced into the chamber 62. The length of the outlet 64 is selected to afford a level of surface-tension which prevents dripping whilst the flow area thereof is determined as a function of the closure member dimensions, conicity and material, as well as the fluid viscosity. The angle of the closure member is one quarter of a degree more than the seat angle α to provide for deformation of the closure member and hence an effective seal with the seat 10. The seat may embody a pair of annular ribs, one on each side of the outlet 64. The valve is disposable, the body being of impact styrene and the closure member and diaphragm of ethyl vinyl acetate.
