Abstract

1,073,874. Grinding. AUTOFLOW ENGINEERING Ltd. Nov. 12, 1965 [Nov. 13, 1964], No. 48018/65. Heading B3D. An abrasive tool for forming a bevel or the like at a predetermined location on a workpiece, such as a lens W, comprises a body 18 including a pair of working faces disposed at an inclination to one another, one of the faces being coarse relative to the other. The workpiece W is mounted in a chuck 16 on a carriage 34 mounted for free end-wise movement on a frame 12 reciprocable towards and away from the tool 18 which is driven by a motor 19 mounted on a second frame 14. The chuck 16 is rotated by a motor 17. The tool may be mounted with its plane parallel to that of the workpiece, or, as shown, at an angle of 45 degrees thereto. The pair of working faces (50a, 52a, Fig. 3) carry abrasive particles of different characteristics so that one face is coarser than the other. With abrasive particles of 30 microns and 63 microns respectively forming fine and coarse faces, the apex of the bevel is formed one-third of the thickness of the lens from one face thereof. In another embodiment using particles of 30 and 53 microns, the apex is <SP>2</SP>/ 5 of the thickness of the lens from one face. The wheel may be made from a single part, each face being coated with the appropriate abrasive, or be made in two parts joined at (54a), each part being formed of bonded abrasive particles; the parts may be bonded together or secured together on an arbor. In a further embodiment, one face (50b, Fig. 4), and a part (52b-2) of face (52b) are of fine abrasive and the remaining part (52b-1) of face (52b) is of coarse abrasive.
