Abstract

1,135,886. Abrading. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP. 11 Aug., 1967 [26 Sept., 1966], No. 36882/67. Heading B3D. A method for vibratory cutting a workpiece comprises providing a tool with a work tip of material harder than the workpiece to be operated upon, mounting a workpiece in working relationship with the tip, introducing abrasive particles between the tip and workpiece, which particles are harder than the workpiece but not harder than the tip, and effecting vibration between the tip and workpiece. The tool may be of diamond, silicon carbide, sintered ceramic, cubic boron nitride or similar hard material, and the abrasive particles be of diamond, aluminium oxide, corundum, boron carbide, silicon carbide or the like for operating on a workpiece of hard material such as quartz, glass, titanium, tungsten carbide, sapphire, stone or the like. The tool tip 22 may be secured to a tool vibrated by piezo-electric or magnetostrictive means and the abrasive particles supplied in a fluid, such as water, to machine the workpiece 24. The tool tip may comprise a whole stone diamond oriented so that its hardest face is presented to the workpiece which may consist of a similar diamond oriented so that a less hard face is engaged by the tool, the abrasive particles also consisting of similar diamonds. The tool may consist of several whole stone diamonds for machining a pattern on the workpiece. The abrasive particles may be continuously circulated by a pump to the workpiece so that as they are reduced in size, the finish produced by the machine is smoother, or fresh particles may be continuously supplied. Either the workpiece or tool may be vibrated and relative linear or rotary movement may be effected between the tool and workpiece to produce slots or screwthreads. The workpiece may be of relatively soft material, such as mild steel, brass or copper and the tool tip of hard material and the abrasive particles harder than the workpieoe and not so hard or as hard at the tool tip. The method may be applied to forming diamond lenses, jewel bearings for watches, needles, dies for wire drawing, filament spinning and extruding, for cutting grooves, indentations and gear teeth, machining semi-conductor material and diffraction gratings.
