Abstract

Novel ketones of the formula <FORM:1073849/C2/1> wherein R1 is alkylcarbonyl and R2 and R3 are respectively isopropenyl and vinyl or isopropyl and ethyl are prepared by reacting 2,6-dimethylocta-2,7-diene with an acid anhydride in the presence of a catalytic amount of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst and, if desired, hydrogenating at a temperature of about90 DEG C. The preferred groups R1 are acetyl and propionyl, and the preferred Friedel-Crafts catalyst is ZnCl2. The hydrogenation is preferably carried out in the presence of a nickel catalyst.
