Abstract

The invention relates to dihydrovinblastine, dihydrodesmethylvinblastine and dihydrovincristine and acid addition salts thereof and preparation thereof by catalytic hydrogenation of compounds of the formula <FORM:1102224/C2/1> wherein R is methyl and hydrogen respectively, in the presence of a noble metal oxide catalyst and an acidified inert medium at room temperature and, if desired, formylating the dehydrodesmethylvinblastine to give dihydrovincrystine. The hydrogenation is effected under low pressure preferably using platinum or palladium oxide in finely divided state or deposited on a support in the presence of a lower aliphatic alcohol such as ethanol acidified with glacial acetic acid. Pharmaceutical compositions, which inhibit transplanted leukemia tumours in mice comprise dihydrovinblastine, dihydrodesmethylvinblastine or dihydrovincristine or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof in association with a pharmaceutical carrier.
