A seal for the floating roof of a storage tank comprises one or more hermetically sealed casings 70 filled with a plurality of discrete masses of resilient compressible material such as urethane or latex foam in a granular, shredded or chunked form. The nature of the material is such that it is capable of retaining and releasing air under pressure and to this end the casing 70 is provided with a compensating valve, see Fig. 2 (not shown). The seal is provided with a wearing band 35 for details of which and its fixing the Specification should be referred to.
