Abstract

Fibre reinforced plastics structures comprise fibres bound by an infusible polymer which is the reaction product of a hardener with normally solid isomers of bis(2,3-epoxycyclopentyl) ether, normally liquid isomer of bis(2,3-epoxycyclopentyl) ether, a mixture comprising normally solid isomers and up to 20 wt. per cent of normally liquid isomers based on the total isomer mixture, or a mixture comprising normally liquid isomer and up to 40 wt. per cent of normally solid isomers based on the total isomer mixture. Hardeners specified are amines, BF3.EtNH2, oxalic acid and polycarboxylic anhydrides. Fibres specified are inorganic fibres or metallic fibres. The plastics structures may be storage tanks, pipes, railway tank cars and tank trailers, lamp posts, vaulting poles, shotgun barrels, underwater vessels and missile casings. Unreinforced castings of the polyepoxide/ hardener mixtures are also disclosed. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 812,374.ALSO:Glass rovings are solution coated with a mixture of a hardener and either (A) normally solid isomers of bis(2,3-epoxycyclopentyl) ether possibly containing up to 20 wt.% based on the total isomers of the normally liquid isomer, or (B) the normally liquid isomer of bis(2, 3-epoxycyclopentyl) ether possibly containing up to 40 wt. per cent of the normally solid isomers based on the total isomers (see Division C3). Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 812,374.
