Abstract

A thermoplastic polyhydroxy ether adhesive comprises a mixture of from 50 to 97 parts of a thermoplastic polyhydroxy ether of formula -[-D-O-E-O-]n-wherein D is the radical residuum of a dihydric phenol, E is a hydroxyl containing radical residuum of an epoxide and n is at least 30, and 3 to 50 parts of a synthetic rubber per 100 mixture. The disclosed polyhydroxy ether is prepared by the reacting of equimolar amounts of 2,2 - bis(4 - hydroxyphenyl) propane and epichlorohydrin together with sodium hydroxide under the usual conditions. Specified synthetic rubbers are chloroprene and nitrile rubbers. More particularly, polychloroprene copolymers of chloroprene with such comonomers as alpha-methyl styrene, acrylonitrile or hydrocarbon dienes in minor amounts especially up to 20% by weight, and diene copolymers containing at least 50% of such conjugated dienes as butadiene, hexadiene, heptadiene, octadiene and nonadiene with at least 2% of such comonomers as acrylonitrile, chloroacrylonitrile and methacrylonitrile-up to 10% of a termonomer, e.g., methyl acrylate, diallyl phthalate, diallyl maleate, allyl methacrylate, methyl methacrylate and, preferably, acrylic acid, may be present. The adhesive composition may be made by blending together the polyhydroxyether and the synthetic rubber. The adhesive is particularly useful in bonding together steel structures.
