Abstract
1,053,270. Polyester moulding compositions. AMERICAN CYANAMID CO. Nov. 25, 1965 [Feb. 18, 1965], No. 50209/65. Heading C3P. Void free moulded articles are produced from a thermosetting composition comprising (1) a major amount of an unsaturated linear polyester resin derived from a polyhydric alcohol and an unsaturated polycarboxylic acid, (2) a minor amount of a copolymerizable monomer, (3) an elastomeric material, (4) a fibrous inorganic filler and (5) an inorganic mineral filler, wherein the composition has 2 to 99 parts of the elastomeric component for each 100 parts of the unsaturated linear polyester component and 5 to 50 parts of the copolymerizable monomer for each 100 parts of the unsaturated linear polyester. First a premix is prepared composed of the elastomeric material, a minor amount of the unsaturated polyester resin and the inorganic filler, by a high shear mixing technique, the premix is dispersed in a suitable solvent and is then used to treat the fibrous inorganic filler. The treated fibrous filler is incorporated into the remainder of the unsaturated polyester resin and a comonomer and the mixture cured. The elastomer may be a natural or synthetic rubber. Those specifically mentioned are styrenebutadiene and butadiene-acrylonitrile rubbers, neoprene rubber, butyl rubber, silicone rubber, polyacrylate rubber and various butadiene rubbers. The fibrous filler may be fibrous glass, nylon, cellulose or derivatives thereof and the inorganic mineral filler may be ground limestone, hydrated alumina, kaolin, aluminium hydroxide or silica.
