Abstract

Pigmented polystyrene is produced by mixing an aqueous mass of a highly dispersed pigment paste with a copolymer of styrene and a C1- 12 alkyl acrylate or methacrylate prepared by emulsion polymerization as described in Specification 1,063,897, coagulating the mixture, removing the aqueous phase from the coagulum, drying and optionally pulverizing the resintreated pigment which is then incorporated into styrene monomer which is then polymerized in the presence of a polymerization catalyst to produce beads of pigmented polystyrene. 0.01-10% of pigment, e.g. a phthalocyanine blue, or carbon black (a number of proprietary pigments are exemplified) may be used in the monomer and the pigment may be dispersed with the aid of cetyl pyridinium bromide, sodium dinaphthyl methane sulphonate or an alkyl phenol ethylene oxide condesate. The polymerization catalys may be bisazo-isobutyronitile or benzoyl peroxide and the styrene may be polymerized in aqueou suspension in the presence of polyvinyl alcohol. The pigmented polystyrene beads may be expanded, e.g. by soaking in n-pentane and then steam treated.
