Abstract

A flooring material comprises at least two layers of cured polyvinyl resin e.g. polyvinyl chloride, one layer being a wear layer and the second layer having particles of activated carbon dispersed therein which serve to prevent substantial migration of dyes through the second layer to the wear layer. The wear layer may be pigmented. The second layer of cured polyvinyl resin may contain at least 0.5% e.g. 1 to 2%, by weight of activated carbon and may have a thickness of from 0.010 to 0.015 inches. At least one further layer of cured polyvinyl resin intervening between the activated carbon-containing layer and the wear layer may be present. A backing layer, e.g. woven hessian with needled jute, cotton, wool fibres or a bitumen-impregnated paper felt, which may contain a dye or other substance which would stain polyvinyl resin floorings on migration thereto, may be present, the backing layer being separated from the wear layer by the activated carbon-containing layer. Such floor material may comprise a backing layer, the activated carbon-containing layer, the wear layer, which may be transparent, and at least one further layer of cured polyvinyl resin intervening between the activated carbon-containing layer and the wear layer, or a backing layer, the activated carbon-containing layer and a pigmented wear layer. The activated carbon may be activated charcoal. The flooring material may have a thickness of at least 0.04 inches. The flooring material may be produced by coating the backing material or a removable film casting substrate with a spreadable vinyl resin composition containing activated carbon, curing the coating and then applying thereto e.g. by coating or as a previously prepared lamina, a polyvinyl resin layer, or at least one polyvinyl resin layer and then the polyvinyl resin wear layer, the film casting substrate being removable from the layer containing activated carbon at any stage after curing of the layer. The layers may be formed by calendering, knife spreading e.g. using a doctor knife with over-roll or over blanket spreading, roller coating, hot melt coating and extrusion. The flooring material may be embossed with a smooth chromium plated roller or with a patterned roller.
