1,072,415. Closures for upper ends of chromatography columns. CESKOSLOVENSKA AKADEMIE VED. Oct. 2, 1964 [Oct. 2, 1963], No. 40220/64. Heading B1X. A closure for the upper ends of chromatography columns comprises a porous body, a capillary duct for admitting a liquid to one surface of the porous body and a packing means, fitting within the column and through which the capillary duct passes, for locating and retaining the porous body in a position which prevents the formation of a liquidfilled space above the charge in the column. In Fig. 3 (not shown), capillary (1) passes through closure (4) and terminates above porous body (5) which is made from layers of filter paper. In Fig. 4 (not shown) the duct through closure (4) (for example a rubber bung) leads to a conical recess (6) within the closure, the recess being filled with a porous body, the interface between the porous body and the column charge being convex to the charge. In Fig. 5, the centre portion of the porous filling is made less permeable by application of a plastics material 13. Packing device 4<SP>1</SP> is held between tubular nut 8 and plate 10; packing sleeve 14 is compressed between plates 10 and 15. In Fig. 6, plate 10 has upward and downward extensions, bottom nut 20 being screwed on its lower end and tube 11 to its upper end. Thread 19 may be truncated or may have a longitudinal groove (Fig. 9) to allow liquid fed in by capillary 1 to flow upwards to porous body 22, which may be of polyetetrafluorethylene or sintered glass. Fig. 7 is a version of the apparatus of Fig. 6 permitting its use in columns of varying diameters. Fig. 8 illustrates a clamping device for capillary (1) for use in narrow columns, for example 1.5 to 3 mm. i.d. In Fig. 10, sleeve 14 or I4<SP>1</SP> has circumferental grooves arranged so that they tend to open under the pressure below the closure. Capillary needle 1 is screwed into plate 10 and axial cut 35 serves to admit the liquid to porous body 22. In Fig. 15 (not shown), bottom nut (20) is screwed on to the lower end of capillary needle 1. Figs. 16 and 17 (not shown) relate to fittings for the top of the capillary needle assembly which enable the needle to be tightened or loosened in nut (20), so increasing or releasing the pressure on the porous body.
