Abstract

1,072,398. Selective printing. TOKYO SHIBAURA ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Dec. 9, 1963 [Dec. 13, 1962], No. 48498/63. Heading B6F. An electrostatic printer comprises a matrix head 24 (Fig. 4), co-operating with a back electrode system to produce a plurality of latent characters, formed by a series of dots arranged in rows along the printing line, on an endless belt 21, which latent images after development with a pulverulent material in a developer 25 are transferred by a transfer device 26 on to a paper web 27 and fused in a fixer 28. Latent images are erased by an eraser 29. The matrix head comprises a plurality of sets 11 of five stylus electrodes 10 1 . . . 10 5 , associated with individual backing electrodes 12, whereby corresponding electrodes in the sets are connected in parallel and the parallel connected electrodes 10 1 . . . 10 5 are connected in turn to five pulse-generating circuits. All electrodes such as 10 1 are energized simultaneously on receipt of an electrical signal representative of the character and to prevent printing of the characters in all character positions the back electrodes 12 are biased by an electrical potential, which is selectively removed by application of a further pulsed potential to effect printing in selected positions only. Characters are built up successively by repeated selective energization of rows 10<SP>1</SP> ... 10 5 of the electrodes as the second medium is advanced in line-spacing direction.
