Abstract

1,094,073. Selective printers. H. GERMER. March 1, 1965 [March 2, 1964], No. 8580/65. Addition to 1,084,285. Heading B6F. [Also in Division G2] Inking arrangements; ink transfer ribbons, discs and rods.-In an electrostatic and/or electromagnet printer of the kind described in the parent Specification, the ink particles are spread evenly to effect a clear consistent character image by employing two transfer media in series. As shown in Fig. 1, inkparticles from a chamber 2 are electromagnetically attracted to first transfer medium, e.g. a rotating disc 1 which travels at a speed which may be several times the velocity of the second transfer medium shown in this Figure as an endless ribbon 4. The ink-particles are transferred from the ribbon 4 by the screen-shaped radiation beams 12 to transfer the particles to a record 6 where they form an immediate image. The ribbon may travel step-by-step or continuously. In a modification, Fig. 4a, two transfer discs 23, 21 are employed, while in a further modification, Fig. 7, ink-particles are firstly transferred on to a rotating disc 23 and then to a rod 41 which is oscillated by quartz crystals. Ink ribbons.-The ink-particles 3 (Fig. 2, not shown), on the ribbon consist of a basic thermoplastic material to which ink additives have been added. The ink particles may have ferromagnetic properties or separate ferromagnetic materials may be added. The ribbon body 4a is radiation permeable and coated with an electrically conductive surface 4b which may be strengthened galvanically and this layer is then coated with a photo-conductive film 4c. The ribbon 31, Fig. 5a (not shown), is coated only at intervals 31b, 31c, 31d which are electrically inter-connected at one edge. This enables printed characters to be seen through the ribbon. Transfer discs.-The coating on the transfer discs may also be arranged at intervals so printed characters may also be seen (Fig. 6, not shown), when a disc is used as the second transfer medium. Screen printers; writing jet printers.-The particles of ink are transferred on to the record 6 through a screen 11. The profiled beam of radiation produced by character screens 12 or by deflector plates strikes upon the ribbon 4, penetrates both the radiation permeable foil body 4a and the electrically conductive layer 4b and produces a reduction of the electrical resistance of the photo-conducting layer 4c. The electrical charges on the surface of the ribbon 4 flow to the electrically conductive layer 4b at these points whereby ink particles 3 now are held less strongly so that the magnet 9 draws particles 3 across the air gap on to the record 6 in the areas exposed to the beam 12. Alternatively, the beam may be deflected to write the desired character. Error correcting.-A special key may be operated to obliterate errors. This removes all particles from the transfer media and no image is formed. Travelling carriages.-A beam deflector 46, Fig. 8 (not shown), may be mounted on a carriage 48 movable in letter-space direction.
