Abstract

1,072,006. Automatic exchange systems. SIEMENS A.G. Sept. 29, 1965 [Sept. 29, 1964; Aug. 4, 1965], No. 41297/65. Heading H4K. Codes of an unspecified sort, received over lines Lan 1 to Lan n, are converted to voicefrequency codes, for transmission over lines Lab 1 to Lab n, by common equipment having a highway MS whereby a single set of voicefrequency generators TG are time shared for the transmission of codes and a single code converter V is time shared for the reception of codes. As shown in Fig. 1, the lines Lan have a fixed association with respective outgoing lines Lab. An address generator AGU and decoder DU cyclically scans the circuits U1 to Un, at the junction between incoming and outgoing lines, so that in each time slot a code of the unspecified sort, if present at the input to one circuit U, is gated to the converter V and the output of that circuit is gated to the highway MS. The address or addresses of voice-frequency generators required for the corresponding transmitted code is sent from the converter V to a circulating store S where over a decoder DG they gate the generators to the highway MS. The store S may contain data which directs the converter V as to conversions particular to circuits U. There may be fewer time slots on the highway MS and in the store S than there are circuits U, the circuits U being scanned for codes on lines Lan which are then allocated a time slot for conversion. As shown in Fig. 2, the codes of unspecified sort are received in circuits EU1 to EUN for transmission by any one of circuits AU1 to AUn, a speech path being set up between the receiving circuit EU and the transmitting circuit AU over a switching network K. The circuits EU may outnumber the circuits AU and in place of the space divided network K a time division network may be used. The circuits EU may be subscriber's line circuits and the circuits AU may be outgoing to other exchanges. Codes detected in a circuit EU are converted in the common equipment which controls the gating of the voice-frequency generators TG to the highway MS and from the highway MS to the associated circuit AU.
