Abstract

1,071,938. Packaging machines. HOLSTEIN & KAPPERT, MASCHINENFABRIK PHOENIX G.m.b.H. May 14, 1965 [May 15, 1964], No. 20527/65. Heading B8C. Apparatus for continuous re-shaping of sachet type packages to parallelepipedic form, the sachets entering the apparatus still joined as a string, comprises forming elements, initially spaced to correspond with the spacing of sachets in the string and moving in a closed path and means to separate the string into individual packages. Means to increase the distance between the forming elements after such separating to facilitate the forming operation are provided. In one embodiment, the forming elements are arranged on a continuously rotating turret, Fig. 2 (not shown), the increase in spacing being achieved by movement radially outwards of individual formers. Each former comprises a sachet side engaging section having a bottom plate 19 and side and top engaging plates 31, 32 spring biased for outward radial movement under the control of a fixed cam 14, relative to the turret 36. It comprises also a sachet and engaging section mounted on a bellcrank 37 pivoted on the turret and capable of being swung inwards from the position of Fig. 3 to overlie the other section, by a cam 40. This section has a spring-loaded head plate 47 on which are pivoted end engaging plates 48 The sachets P enter with the formers as shown in Fig. 3 and the side sections then begin to move outwards whereby toggle linkage 29 swings inwards the plates 31, 32 to square up the package section. Means 15, 16, Fig. 2 (not shown), separate the packages and the end engaging section moves to lie over the plates 32. The side sections move further outwards so that the plates 32 press on and cause retraction of the plate 47. Relatively fixed cam means 54, 55, Fig. 4 (not shown), swing in the end plates 48 forming, with the side plates 31, triangular corner flaps as follows. The plates 31 each consist of a centre portion and end portions articulated to it. These end portions 60, Fig. 5 (not shown), initially follow the increased width of the sachet towards the end seals. As the plate 47 moves outwards, however, rods 59 on arms 52 are forced inwards by relatively fixed means 53 to press the portions 60 into the plane of the centre portions. The package corners are flattened and trapped between the end portions 60 and outwardly protruding flanges 61 of the plates 48, the latter supporting means 62 to weld their layers together and render permanent the package shape. Finally the formers return to the position of Fig. 3 when at the bottom of the turret track, permitting the packages to fall on to a conveyer beneath. In another embodiment, Fig. 1 (not shown), the formers are joined in a chain by toggle linkage, the latter being constrained by a cam track to reduce and increase the former spacing as required.
