A road vehicle steering control unit intended to be less dangerous then the conventional steering wheel in the case of an accident to the vehicle has an elongated body 11 moulded in foamed synthetic resin material and formed with a pair of channel-sectioned guides 12, 13 which engage an inwardly-extending T-shaped portion 16 of an endless flexible member 14 which is moved in the manner of a steering wheel and has teeth 18 engaging a pinion 21 on a shaft 19 to transmit rotation, through a servo mechanism (not shown), to the front wheels of the vehicle. The curved parts of guides 12, 13 may be replaced by pulley wheels. The body also houses switches 23, direction indicator and gear change levers 24, 25 and instruments 26, 27.
