Abstract

897,507. Steering-wheels. DAIMLER-BENZ A.G. June 17, 1960, No. 21359/60. Class 80 (4). A vehicle steering-wheel comprising a ring 5 connected by spokes 4 to a hub 1 is provided with a deformable or frangible cover extending over the hub and parts of the spokes to minimize injury to the driver in a collision. Part A of Fig. 1 shows a dished cover 6 of rubber or plastic which has spokes 8 for a horn ring 9, the horn contact equipment 15 lying within the hub 1. The cover 6 may lie in or below the plane of ring 5. Part B of Fig. 1 shows a sheetmetal cover comprising a plate 11 and a folded part 12 supporting a horn ring 13. Part C of Fig. 2 shows a dished cover comprising a soft part 24 carrying a frangible ring 25 of hard rubber. Part D of Fig. 2 shows a sheet-metal cover as in Fig. 1 but including a reinforcing strip 29 at its outer edge. A horn ring 22 is carried by spokes 21 lying behind the wheel spokes 20. In a modification a dished cover has an outer resilient ring.
