Abstract

1,069,257. Vehicle wheels. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. Dec. 3, 1963 [Dec. 21, 1962], No. 48496/62. Heading B7C. A wheel suitable for use on light vehicles such as trolleys comprises a body member 1 and rim member 2 moulded integrally from a substantially rigid thermoplastic resin composition, e.g. polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene or polypropylene, and contains an annular flexible portion 3 whereby the rim member 2 is radially resilient. The flexible portion 3 is formed by bellowing the radially outer part of the body member 1 outboardly from the remainder of the body member. The rim member 2 is formed as a continuation of the flexible portion 3. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1, the tyre retaining flanges of the rim member 2 are provided by an inboard part of the flexible portion 3 and a raised edge portion 13. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 4, not shown), the rim member (2) comprises a hooklike extension (40) which is embedded in a solid rubber tyre. A bearing portion is provided at the centre of the body member 1 in the form of a housing 4 through which is received a nylon bush 7. An additional hub member 16 is welded to the body member 1 and has at its centre a bearing portion axially in line with that of the body member 1. This bearing portion comprises an axially extending housing 19 through which is secured a second nylon bush. When the wheel is in use an axle is threaded through both bearing portions.
