Abstract

A photographic colloid transfer process comprises applying an aqueous alkaline solution containing 2-hydroxymethyl-2-nitro-1, 3-propanediol to control gelatine transfer, to an imagewise exposed unhardened gelatino-silver halide emulsion, there being incorporated in the emulsion layer and/or the alkaline solution a tanning silver halide developing agent with or without a non- tanning developing agent e.g. a mixture of 4- phenylcateehol with 4-methoxy-alpha-naphthol, so as to bring about tanning development of the layer, and transferring a stratum of the unexposed areas to a receiving support. The alkaline solution may contain (i) 2-diethylaminoethanol or iminodiethanol (ii) sodium bicarbonate or carbonates or phosphates (iii) sodium salicylate as gelatine softener (iv) a sequestering agent e.g. E.D.T.A. or its sodium salt, and (v) sodium p-toluene sulphonate. The solution may be in concentrate form comprising in one package (i), (ii), (iii), (iv) and water and in the other 2-hydroxy methyl- 2-nitro-1, 3-propanediol. The transferred stratum may be rendered more ink-receptive by a gelatine hardening procedure using for example a mixture of the condensate of 2-furaldehyde with resorcinol, tannic acid 1, 3-diethyl-2-thiourea, glycerol, ethyl alcohol, glacial acetic acid and water.
