Abstract

1,071,655. Hatch cover. SWAN, HUNTER & WIGHAM RICHARDSON Ltd., and N. GILCHRIST. March 9, 1964 [Dec. 10, 1962], No. 46510/62. Heading B7S. [Also in Division E2] A ship's hatch cover for liquid cargo tanks comprises a cover plate 3 pivotally mounted on coaming 1 and adapted to be clamped on the coaming by toggle clamps 20; a counterweight 14 mounted on the cover plate and a pivotally mounted lifting handle 15, 16 adapted to serve for assisting in the clamping of the cover plate and also as a lever means bearing down on the counterweight for raising the cover plate. As shown, welded to the coaming 1 are two pairs of plate elements 6 having elongated holes 7 and similarly welded to cover plate 3 are hinge plates 8 positioned between and hinged to the plate elements 6. Each hinge plate has an arm 12 extending beyond the hinge axis which carries a round steel bar or counterweight 14 of half the weight of the hatch cover. Between each pair of plate elements 6 and adjacent the inner side of plates 8 there are pivoted arms 15, which are connected together by tube 16. The ends of the arms carry plates 17 having recessed pads 18 which are engaged by toggle bolts 19 when the cover plate is in the closed position. When the hatch is to be opened the toggles are loosened and swung clear, the tube 16 and arms 15 are raised until arms 15 bear down on counter weight 14 whereupon further downward movement lifts the cover plate to position 3B. In this position a hole 24 in the plate elements registers with holes (25) (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown) in arms 15 and plates 8, and pins not shown lock the cover plate in position. Each arm 15 also has a hole 26 (Fig. 3, not shown) which when the arms bear on the counterweight in the open position of the cover plate is in register with a hole 27 in one of the hinge plates 8. When the cover plate is to be closed the aforesaid pins are removed from holes 24, (25) and placed in holes 26, 27 to connect arms 15 to the cover plate 3. An upward force when applied to tube 16 then moves the cover to the closed position.
