Abstract

1,071,450. Prosthetic femoral head. T. CHRISTIANSEN. May 18, 1966 [May 26, 1965], No. 22185/66. Heading A5R. In a hip-joint prosthesis comprising a headpiece or capitulum for engagement in the socket of the pelvis and a spindle portion for insertion into the medullary cavity in the thighbone shaft, the capitulum is rotatably connected to the spindle portion; the capitulum may also be removably connected to the spindle portion. As illustrated in the Figure, spindle portion 1 has lightening holes 2, a guide rib 3 for localization in the medullary cavity, an edge 4 for contacting the thigh-bone shaft, and an integral trunnion 5. The rotatable connection is formed by the trunnion fitting into a corresponding aperture 6' in the spherical capitulum 6. Means, for example groove 7, may be provided in the upper end of the spindle portion for co-operation with tools (not shown) to facilitate insertion into the medullary cavity. Sealing means, for example at least one O-ring 8, may be provided to prevent entry of body fluids into the connection. The angle alpha between the axis x of the spindle portion and the axis y of the trunnion preferably is at least 45‹, for example 65‹. The spindle portion may be made of non-corrosive metal; the capitulum may be made of a selflubricating plastics material, for example polytetrafluorethylene. In use, the capitulum is intended to remain stationary in the socket of the pelvis, movement of the leg being received by the mutually-rotatable surfaces forming the connection.
