Abstract

1446773 Prosthetic hip joints NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 3 Jan 1974 [12 Jan 1973] 1790/73 Heading ASR A prosthetic hip joint comprises a femoral head replacement component 1 having an elongated tapered intermedullary stem 2 and a ball-shaped head 4 for use in articulating engagement with a prosthetic acetabular socket, and a larger ball-shaped head assembly 5 demountably securable around the head 4 to modify the component 1 for articulating engagement with a natural acetabular socket. The assembly 5 comprises integral inner and outer caps 6a, 6b, of plastics and metal respectively, mounted to head 4 by two semi-annular shells 7 engaging a necked portion 3 of component 1 and an annular groove 6c in cap 6a, the assembly being retained on the head 4 by screws 10 carried in bores 8. The groove 6c may be provided with flats engaging corresponding portions of the shells 7 to prevent mutual rotation.
