Abstract

Tension in a textile strand, which, as it is being unwound from a package, is moved laterally to and fro, is equalised by passing the strand around a plurality of rotating rollers arranged so that the strand path is a succession of alternately straight and curved increments of path, and then to a laterally fixed guide. The rollers may be driven and the guide is preferably a flanged roller guide. The strand may then be drawn and/or stuffer-crimped, or separated into component filaments for winding or twisting. The strand tension may be further controlled by providing the package support with a fluid actuated brake cylinder, and by passing the strand after the roller guide around two rolls (Fig. 5, not shown) one of which is movable by the strand when the tension varies and is connected to a ball valve to vary the bleed rate of the fluid in the supply conduit to the cylinder.
